Maria From Sesame Street Is Retiring!

Sonia Manzano began her career at 22, pioneering Sesame Street as "Maria," who is memorably one of the first Latina individuals featured on TV.

In the duration of her 44 year career according to The Washington Post, Manzano was nominated for 2 Emmys, and won 15 for her writing on the show. It also opened many doors to issues of race and gender in the country based on the work she was doing both on and off the show.

Her interviews on her life are very touching and revealing as to why she chose her line of work, and TV will be missing one of the most influential faces of it's time.

Amy Cooper is a writer and pop culture fact nerd, and on multiple occasions has been referred to as a “Walking iPod.”
