Just in case you haven’t had a chance to see last night’s episode of Grey’s Anatomy, be warned.
If you thought you heard hearts breaking all across America last night and cries of “Why Shonda? Why?” echoing through the hills and valleys, that’s because one of the saddest plot twists in Grey’s Anatomy history played out before our very eyes.
Last night we bid farewell to a key character when Mcdreamy, Derek Shepherd, died as a result of a car accident. This wraps up an 11 year run on the hit show for actor Patrick Dempsey. Has it been 11 years? It seems like just yesterday we were Mcdreaming our lives away.
So maybe it’s because we’re talking about a nighttime drama and one’s mind tends to go to “drama” and conspiracy theory, but does anyone else find the statement that ABC issued to E!News a bit, well, interesting?
“After 11 seasons on Grey's Anatomy, Patrick Dempsey is moving on to pursue other interests. Dr. Derek Shepherd is an iconic character and we've been proud to be the home of 'McDreamy' and the 'Mer/Der' love story. The devotion of Grey's fans throughout the years has been a testament to the creative mind of Shonda Rhimes and Dempsey's talent. 'McDreamy' will be greatly missed and we wish Patrick the very best in his future endeavors.
While the statement is very nice, perhaps it’s the use of the terms “pursue other interests” and “we wish Patrick the very best in his future endeavors” that make it sound like one of the memos a boss writes we there’s an uncomfortable parting of the ways at work. Or of course, maybe I’m letting the drama and the shock of last night get too much of me.
Bottom line. Things will never be the same for Meredith Grey or any of us fans.
